The upper block and lower block separate to allow for sharpening tall knifes and short knives. The small block was made for very small knives, but doesn't work as well as I had hoped. . The 15 degree is great for rough sharpening. The 20 degree works best for putting a clean edge on the knife. With this combo, you will have a sharpener as good as the $150 sharpeners on amazon.
