The Schmidt Coupling

This 3D Printed Engineering Project was inspired by the work of Richard Schmidt, who in February 1967 was granted a patent for this style of coupling. This coupling, called the Schmidt Offset Coupling, is characterised by its ability to transmit constant angular velocity during dynamic radial output shaft displacements. The Schmidt Offset Coupling has no variation in input and output shaft velocities during operation, even when the output shaft is operating at its maximum radial displacement.

The Schmidt Offset Coupling is a compact, robust solution for high torque and low speed transmission. Some of its limitations, however, include having higher mass moment inertias and being costlier to manufacture. When the input and output shafts are collinear during operation, furthermore, the coupling vibrates due to its centre of mass being offset from its axis of rotation.
