So I've had a little extra time on my hands, lately. For your enjoyment, I present to you a 1/4 scale model of the Sputnik I. First manmade satellite to orbit the earth.
Documentation on this object is a bit limited, because "Big Soviet State Secret", and I went back a forth between photos of the time, reproductions, and a few drawings. I think I managed to capture the details and dimensions, reasonably.
The finished model (the sphere itself) measures 151mm. The Antenna (not included in the model) are a further 735mm in scale. This can be accomplished by using Basswood dowels. I elected not to model the antenna because you would need at least four segments per antenna (16 total) and that is a lot of printing to create a feature which does not look very authentic.
I design my models - inspired by plastic kits, so assembly is required. CA glue is a good friend. I do sand and prime for finish paint, but I think the model will print nicely with filament of appropriate colo
