This was designed with a few things in mind.
First: Relatively minimal amount of material (to do this I opted to use string for a portion of the support between the two printed pieces).
Second: Accessibility to individual spools (I wanted the ability to easily add or remove spools which were not in use without the need to displace more than one spool at a time).
Third: A way to prevent spools that were not in use from unwinding everywhere.
One additional consideration was the ability to store spools tightly packed together. I have 15 filament spools atm, stacked in 3-4 piles on the living-room floor of my apartment. A large portion of the goal of this design is to move them away from my floor...
A Couple of Notes: I printed these pieces with a 50% fill and 2mm shell thickness (as well as a raft) which took about 4 hours a piece. The parts came out significantly sturdier than I was expecting. Additionally, I could not find my spool of kite string (I moved not that long
