I have build this turbine with the objective to produce electricity to charge small devices like smartphone or powering a led strip.
I can't use solar panel because my balcony is lit by the sun 4 hours per day. But luckily for me, i live near the sea and there is constant wind which coming with the tide, so i decided that building a wind turbine can be a good alternative.
This wind turbine is pretty reliable and robust, it survive many storms (wind > 110km/h !) with little damage (some nuts tend to loosen, they were remplace by nyloc).
This wind turbine starts with wind speed of 3m/s (approx .10km/h) with no load.
The measured torque on the shaft is approximately 0.25N.m at 20km/h wind. I think is sufficient to move a stepper motor to produce some electricity but it will increase the wind speed at which the turbine starts.
I am using stepper motor from Digikey (ref 1528-1062-ND) as generator and a full bridge rectifier
